Consumer Rights

The Constitution of Costa Rica sets forth that consumers and users are entitled to the protection of their health, environment, safety and economic interests; to receive appropriate, truthful information; to freedom of choice and equal treatment. Therefore, according to Costa Rican laws, any consumer whose rights have been violated can either file a complaint before the National Consumer Commission, or bring a lawsuit to defend their rights.

  • Lawsuits in case of violation of consumer rights, as well as other legal actions to annul any abusive clauses in adhesion contracts
  • Advisory services in the preparation and registration with the Commercial and Consumer Support Division of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Business of installment sales plans or future provision of services, such as travel plan sales, shares of stock, titles and rights where consumers participate as owners, partners or associates, and future development projects, such as clubs, resorts, time sharing programs, residential developments, exploitation of industrial, agricultural, farming and commercial activities
  • Consumer organization and consultancy
  • Advisory services in the preparation and revision of contractual clauses, guarantees, and other documents intended for consumers
  • Registration of associations for the defense of consumers before the Public Services Regulatory Authority
  • Advisory services to consumer associations in case of oppositions to the setting of prices for public services by the Public Services Regulatory Authority
